Introducing the Purple Pancake Cactus...

This lovely cactus can be found most commonly in the deserts of the American Southwest - in
this case, the Mohave desert in Southeastern Nevada. It's one of about a dozen species of
the Prickly Pear family. During our Spring visit they were just about to explode into blossom.

Inspiration from the Straits of Taiwan...

During the Vietnam Era the US Coast Guard was the only branch of the military that would guarantee, in writing, that they would send me to a school after completion of boot camp - in exchange for a four-year enlistment.

So, after a year studying radio communications in New York City and another year on a "search and rescue" ship in the Caribbean as an apprentice radio operator, year three  proved to be life changing. I was sent to a tiny island in the northern Philippine Chain (see map) as radioman in charge.

There wasn't a great deal to do after work, so, I began making black and white photos of my surroundings. What started out as a hobby to fill the time, soon became a passion and, ultimately, my life's work.

The Southwest Desert...

All artists - painters, photographers, sculptors, poets - seek to share their interpretation of the world
on a canvas of their choice. The galleries of photographs on this website are an invitation into my
personal work. My most recent body of work can be found in the "American Southwest" gallery.

When my son and daughter-in-law moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, I was tagged with the respon-
sibility of hauling their possessions cross-country in a U-Haul van. Rolling through the barren
landscape of the Southwest my image of the desert as a wasteland began to evolve. There is
a stark beauty in the solitude; nothing is excess - nothing is wasted. I recalled a quote from the
French novelist Balzac: "In the desert there is everything and there is nothing".

I find more things to see every time I visit.
